It was a misreading on my part. When they announced the move from 1.25 to 1.0 last fall, I had a subsequent letter stating that it would remain at 1.25 - my bad. The 1.25 went away on February 1 this year.

I will be looking to move on as well, but for the time being, it's still my primary card.

While this is probably not the case here, don't sneeze at annual fees in all cases. Long ago, the Discover Private Issue was $15/year annual fee and I wouldn't get it, even though it was 2% uncapped at the time.

Re: Is Two Enough ?

My only suggestion for improvement would be to carry a MasterCard as well, especially if you travel. 99.9% of the time, Visa and MC are interchangeable, but that .1% of the time can make a difference (or can help when MC runs promotions).

I'm basically never under the $6500 tier. I make sure to hit it within the first week or two of the annual cycle, so that's not really an issue for me. I use the Wachovia Visa for everything where Amex can't be used unless I realize that it's EDP, and then I break out the Chase card. It gets used ve...

Re: Cashback at $200 thresholds vs Cashback annually

Michael echoed my sentiments before I could write them. I don't mind playing some games to earn more cash, but there is a tradeoff between the ease of a couple of cards and elaborate systems that require lots of effort. I like the simplicity of telling my wife "use Amex always, then pick (visa/MC of...

This card may be worth another look as the "Visa" backup to Amex if you like. It's a 1%/3% card but if you redeem in $200 increments, that goes up to a 1.25%/3.75% card.

Make sure you are using either Amex Blue Cash, Citi Platinum Dividends, or Discover Platinum Gas to get 5% off your gas purchases - that's as much as fifteen cents per gallon!

I did an analysis of my charges over the past three years, and I was able to use Amex for 93% of my purchases, based on dollars. Having said that, my favorite MC/Visa is probably the Citi Dividend Platinum Select. The Chase Ultimate Cash card was probably next best, but it was pulled on July 20th.

Message from the other side

I got this email: Dear Grapevine readers... I work on the other end of a CC company for the travel side of things. (No need to say which because they are all so similar) I take your calls regarding your travel plans and redemptions. All of the travel reward programs send you paperwork with your cred...

Bank of America Buys MBNA

Should make for interesting times, if this deal goes through (which it probably will). BofA will be issuing cards for Wachovia, it's #1 rival in Charlotte. Should be lots of fun to watch - and see what happens to the various other card offers around. MBNA is big in the co-branded cards... Read the a...

I would just have to say that there are no tricks involved here. My personal theory is the following: 1) Devout loyalty to staying ON-topic - (almost) everything you read on this site is about rewards cards and goodies 2) Low graphic content - lots of text 3) Timely content 4) Longevity. Thanks for a useful site. Thought you might like this info. AMEX has programs with both Starwood and Hilton. The Starwood program is probably best, though Hilton's not bad either. Starwood lets you redeem on most airlines of course, but also gives you a 5,000 point bonus when you transfer 20,000, i....
